2025 Developing Your Broader Impact Identity Workshop

This workshop introduces the concept of Broader Impact (BI) Identity and guides participants in developing this essential aspect of their professional identity. Participants will explore how their research, personal interests, skills, resources, and partnerships shape their BI Identity while addressing the challenges of translating these into impactful activities. Through self-reflection, group discussions, and generative AI tools, attendees will learn strategies to map their BI Identity. All are welcome, but participants are encouraged to bring a device with access to AI tools for hands-on engagement.

Lisa Lawrence

Lisa Lawrence is the Marine Education Program Leader at VIMS and extension staff for Virginia Sea Grant. She earned a master's degree in fisheries from VIMS during which time she became involved in education and outreach, igniting her passion for and launching her career in marine education. Lisa's work focuses on creating resources and professional development opportunities for teachers, guiding graduate students in science communication, and collaborating with researchers to translate their work for public impact. Lisa is a recipient of the Mid-Atlantic Marine Education Association’s Informal Educator Award and the National Marine Educators Association’s James Centerino Award.

Hillary Parmentier

Hilary Parmentier is the Professional Development Coordinator for Virginia Sea Grant. She has over 20 years of experience in education, mentoring, and professional development. Formally, she worked as an English instructor at both the high school and college levels. She graduated from the University of Michigan, earning her B.A. in English/Education, an M.A. in Education, and an M.A. in English Composition/American Literature. She recently graduated from the University of West Florida, earning an Education Specialist degree in Curriculum and Instruction. Hilary enjoys spending time with her family and going to the beach in her free time.

Celia Cackowski

Celia Cackowski is a Marine Education Specialist with the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) Marine Advisory Program. A biologist by training, she spent several years in marine research before switching gears into public outreach. Celia holds a bachelor's in marine biology from Roger Williams University, a master's in biology from Miami University, and an executive certificate in environmental communication from Duke. She currently works in support of ocean literacy and workforce development by creating digital media for global audiences, facilitating professional development for science teachers, and mentoring graduate students with an interest in science communication.
