Special Session
Inclusive science communication (ISC) challenges the traditional structure of scientific communication and instead intentionally centers diverse voices and identities, especially those often marginalized in science. ISC is grounded in recognizing diverse societal expertise, acknowledges the essential role of culture, provides democratic access to science, and is based in dialogue, public participation, relationship-building, intention, reciprocity, and reflection. For this session, we aim to create an inclusive dialogue and learning experience, where participants will be able to hear from and converse with a range of speakers who will provide their experiences, perspectives, ideas and guidance on how to practice and embody inclusivity in our scientific work and communications. This interactive session will include a dialogue with an Indigenous Elder from Alaska, reflections from speakers on topics such as centering Indigenous peoples and Indigenous knowledge in research and communications; how to create space in the scientific community for collaborative, community-engaged frameworks and intersecting identities; and the power of narratives and storytelling to engage others outside of our inner circles. We will end the session with an interactive panel discussion with all of the speakers to discuss what we have learned, ask questions, identify current and future challenges and opportunities, and provide space for reflection. We invite you to join us in this rich and timely dialogue, in order to co-create intentional space to help move our scientific community towards more inclusive and equitable practices. |
