About This Workshop

Environmental data sets are often quite messy. This workshop is aimed to enhance participants’ skills to use R to convert environmental data sets to meaningful inferences and elegant visualizations. This workshop will give the participants to learn and practice on four essential types of data analysis in R, namely, (1) data importing and cleaning, (2) data manipulation and visualization, (3) spatial analysis, and (4) reproducible data analysis workflow. Each of the four topics will be covered in a separate session that includes a lecture, an exercise, and a break (90 minutes in total).

 About the Presenters

Vyacheslav Lyubchich, PhD
 Vyacheslav Lyubchich Photo

Dr. Vyacheslav Lyubchich is an assistant research professor at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science. He is a co-author and maintainer of three R packages: funtimes, showboot, and lawstat. Lyubchich co-teaches two statistics courses employing R, where all students prepare their homeworks using dynamic report features. Lyubchich also teaches a two-module course on R Programming, which gradually introduces students to R for data manipulation, visualization, statistical modeling, including code debugging, version control, and parallel computing. Dong Liang, PhD
Dong Liang Photo Dr. Dong Liang is an associate research professor at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science. He often uses Bayesian hierarchical models and geo-spatial tools to fuse information from survey design and multiple sources. He co-teaches two statistics courses in Biometry and Spatial Statistics with Dr. Lyubchich using R. He also teaches a short course on Bayesian statistics, which introduces students to R and Bayesian packages. He is the maintainer of R package ltsk.
