2023 Call for Scientific Session, Workshop, and Design Team Proposals

Call for Submissions Is Now Closed for Scientific Sessions and Workshops - You May Still Submit A Design Team Proposal Until 2 December 2022

Thank you to all who submitted a proposal for CERF 2023!

The Scientific Program Committee for the Coastal and Estuarine Research Federation’s 27th Biennial Conference (CERF 2023) invites proposals for Scientific Sessions and Workshops. The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a shift to a virtual conference in 2021 and we applaud the tremendous efforts of the 2021 organizing committee for bringing us a successful and wonderful event. However, we are pleased to announce that, for 2023, we are planning on a return to an in-person conference. In consideration of what we’ve all been through over these past few years, we’ve chosen “Resilience and Recovery” as our conference theme to reflect not only the scientific context of those terms but also the resilience of our own scientific society and community as we recover and move forward.

We come together in an inclusive and welcoming space to network, celebrate our work, learn from each other, and grow within our amazing field as we endeavor to connect science and society in the collective goals of preserving coastal and estuarine habitats, resources, and heritage. We hope you will join the large international group of scientists and researchers who will be attending the event in Portland, Oregon 12–16 November 2023.

We invite you to submit one or more of the following:

Scientific Session Proposals

Please consider submitting a proposal to convene a scientific session that explores CERF’s traditional science, education, and policy disciplines from a unique perspective, taking advantage of the diverse experiences of conference attendees. Special sessions are encouraged to promote interactions and discussions surrounding the conference theme: “Resilience and Recovery.” Of particular interest are research approaches that directly incorporate diversity and inclusion that bring in unique perspectives and talents that accelerate science. Proposals may include perspectives addressing social implications of coastal and estuarine research, as well as outreach and educational strategies to effectively communicate findings to diverse audiences. We encourage educators to submit a session proposal related to their experience with teaching and/or scientific communication, as presenters in an education session will also be permitted to present their scientific research in another session.

Thank you for submitting your scientific session proposals!

Workshop Proposals

Workshop proposals are encouraged to offer participants an interactive experience addressing the conference theme, technical/scientific content, professional skills development, or other topical areas. The ideal workshop will have broad appeal among CERF conference attendees at all career levels and across academia, government, NGO, and private sectors.

Thank you for submitting your workshop proposals!

Design Competition Team Proposals

The CERF 2023 Coastal Design Competition is a forward-facing initiative to inspire students and faculty across the disciplines of architecture, engineering, ecology, biology, and social science to work together in proposing design solutions and innovative strategies to make our coastal environments more resilient in the face of coastal impacts of climate change. The Design Competition is also intended as a complementary way in which CERF can also collaborate with local communities to problem-solve together around pressing challenges. The 2023 Coastal Design Competition focuses on critical issues of coastal settlement, ecosystem restoration, flood protection, and economic development highlighting the capacity of faculty-led, transdisciplinary teams to solve coastal problems and respond to climate change.
